OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

Bring everyday life back some history

Bring everyday life back some history

Sun Bleached is a lighting object created from discarded linen textile remnants, emerging from an exploration of material cycles, forgotten traditions, and the relationship between light and transformation. The project takes inspiration from the historical practice of bleaching linen fabrics by laying them across open meadows, where sunlight, moisture, and time slowly altered the material. Rather than treating this process as a literal reference, Sun Bleached approaches it as a memory — a quiet gesture carried through generations, where nature itself became part of making.

By using textile waste as its primary material, the project shifts attention toward the hidden value of what is often overlooked or discarded. Linen, a material deeply embedded in cultural histories and everyday life, becomes detached from its original function and enters a new context. Fragments and remnants are brought together to form an object that exists between softness and structure, familiarity and abstraction. The process of reworking these materials becomes a way of extending their life while allowing them to carry traces of previous forms and uses.

OUTCOME

A balance between performance, practicality and aesthetics

Light within the project is understood as more than a functional element. It acts as a continuation of the narrative itself — not only illuminating the object, but activating it. As the surface interacts with light, subtle shifts of transparency, texture, and shadow emerge, creating changing perceptions depending on time, movement, and proximity.

Sun Bleached exists as a meeting point between old rituals and contemporary making, questioning how traditional knowledge can be translated into new forms and how discarded materials can become carriers of new meaning. Through this dialogue, the object seeks to create a sense of familiarity that feels both distant and contemporary at the same time.
